As if the book would never end, since the book was based on the author's son Nic's addiction to drugs the book couldn't end until Nic's addiction to drugs was no more. At the end of the book David Scheff learns not to blame himself for his son's addiction because the addiction was really being fed by other problems and missing factors in his life.
David as well other people that loved Nic were impacted by Nic's addiction, so in other words, it was his addiction that was the antagonist. Throughout the book David goes through an emotional journey because he truly loves his son. David had sleepless nights knowing that his son could have wounded up on the streets without shelter, or in a hospital bed due to an overdoses of crystal meth in a world that was still fairly new to him-he was just 21 years of age- There was also the worry of having Nic hurt his loved ones by hurting them physically or by breaking into their houses and stealing money as well as pills and medications. David also had the worry of his son never recovering from his addiction. David felt hurt and betrayed that his son that was a genius in school, loving to write would lose all his aspirations, dreams, and hopes in life.
David suffered an almost fatal hemorrhage, he thinks that it was from his sons addiction that really caused it. David was also very strong where everyone told him give up on your son he isn't getting better, he is not coming back, and he is lost, but how could he give up on something that means so much too him, someone that has a chance even though it's a small one.
David was glad at the end of the book, and he had wished he could have finished his book a lot sooner, but he was just glad that he had his son that was safe and he still hopes that he stays sober. David never gave up on his son and it was that small hope and that fear that kept him trying and trying over and over to help his son get sober.
